It’s super simple! By the time I post it, you might be able to make one for yourself. Check out the LFSR references on wikipedia, the bitwise operations in the Processing resouce (hint: XOR is ^), and bit extraction: var » pos & 1;

What program do you input your algorithms into? I'm getting into generative art as a new medium and I'm a bit lost.
I would recommend Processing. The tools for pushing pixels around are really powerful. Check Adam Ferriss’s work for more inspiration! Quartz Composer and openFrameworks are other possibilities, and just now discovered Cinder.
The dithering is 100% algorithmic. I’ve not “hand written” my own algorithms yet, but I plan to. To date I’ve been using the dithering tools available in GIMP and Photoshop when converting images to indexed color modes.
