50% Grey

A sketch created by repeatedly compressing a fade from black to 50% grey and back again.  AviDemux was used to remove key frames and to perform light datamoshing.  Hex Fiend was used in a couple of passes of databending.  A single still frame was cropped for the compositions above.

Busting Sprocket Holes in VLC with Bank of America Gradient Study
Recipe:
Manually extract the color information from the HTML/CSS of a corporate website.
Create a custom color palette using the color information.
Generate a gradient using the custom color palette.
Export as high resolution image.
Open image and zoom in.
Move image and take a series of screen captures.
Animate screen captures and create a GIF; index using the custom color palette and Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorithm.
Open GIF in Quicktime and export as MP4 video file.
Datamosh in Avidemux
Databend using Hex Fiend
Open in Quicktime and export file.
Repeat steps 9 trough 11 as desired.
Databend one final time and save a s new file.
Open in VLC
Create an animation from the screen captures from VLC trying to read your file.
Upload to Tumblr.
Share your recipe.

An animated GIF produced for the Born in 1987 show on “The Wall” in the Photographer’s Gallery of London was opened in Quicktime7Pro, exported as an MP4, successively databent using a hex editor, then re-opened in QT7.  The images are screen captures taken after scrubbing the resulting video along its breaks.
