This is an animation from a series of sketches created while designing surface patterns for Aldea Home in San Francisco.
The process:
Generate a palette from the Spoonflower color guide.
Create gradients between colors within the palette.
Perform a pass of color quantization to fit the gradient to the color guide palette.
Down-sample the resolution 50% without interpolation.
Up-sample the resolution to desired pattern size.

Quantum Tidal Effect
An animation created by blending between a gradient and its 180 rotated double.  Color quantization via an improved Floyd-Steinberg method using colors compatible with the 8 color palette used to create my machine knit 40”x60” blankets.

Alpha Test
Color quantization using a Floyd-Steinberg dithering method and a custom palette is applied to an animated fade between two colors not present within the final palette.  The result is down sampled by 50% without using interpolation (every other row/column of pixels is discarded).

Intermediaries No. 2

Recipe:

1. Create looping fade between two colors.

2. Use a Floyd-Steinberg (or other) dithering algorithm to reduce the color palette down to 2-6 colors.

3. Re-scale/Down-sample the image to 50% using no-interpolation.

4. Page through frames and select the best re-imaginings of the intermediate colors in your fade.

Seems that tumblr’s image compression algorithm is getting more aggressive…

Oscillating Between Dawn and Dusk (Never Day / Never Night)
Dithering and Resampling Artifacts in GIMP.  Started with two layers—-one orange, the other blue—-at 1920 x 1080 px.  Created a blended frame animation to fade between the two.  Dithered using Floyd-Steinberg, then exported as GIF.  Loaded into Quicktime 7 Pro and noticed some pretty awesome artifacts at 50% scale and attempted to recreate intentionally.  Down-sampled and rescaled a 250x250 patch of the original to produce the above animation.  Artifacts of algorithms designed to work with human perceptual characteristics are used to induce artifacts in visual perception.
