Glitch Textiles presents: Binary Blankets
A collection of blankets aimed at making visible the hidden data structures that give shape to everyday life. The materiality of our digital age is composed of binary data encoded on electronic devices and transmitted through the airwaves on invisible frequencies of light. As an alternative to the screen, Binary Blankets literally gives you a way to experience the fabric of this otherwise invisible and intangible side of our digital world.
This initial collection features designs from a handful of binary files from programs such as Microsoft Word, iTunes, Google Chrome, and Mac OSX.
Each Design Limited to an Edition of 5.
$350 USD + $15 Shipping (see site for details)
Textile designer Phillip Stearns was on track for a career in engineering when he veered into the uncharted waters of electronics, sound imaging and design. Fast-forward to his MFA at the California Institute of the Arts and some experimentation with rewired cameras, and the result is Glitch, a collection of woven art that Stearns generates from short-circuited cameras.

Dither Automata Studies No. 18 and 19
Source image on left, textile reproduction on right.
After a long back and forth with a textile manufacturer, I was able to obtain mockups of some designs and pixel dimensions required for a direct pixel to stitch correlation. From these, I extracted the color palette used in the production of their photoblankets and produced a series of works that deal with medium specific constraints and the artifacts produced by techniques of color quantization to represent images using only 8 colors.
Recipe:
- Create custom color palette (sourced from mockup in my case)
- Use the color palette to create gradients between colors in a 24bit RGB color space
- Quantize to the custom color palette using a Floyd-Steinberg or similar dithering process
- Scale to 50% without interpolation (“nearest neighbor” or “no interpolation”)
For the above examples, I also did some mirroring.
